Our Rossmoor - A Great Place To Live Since 1957

Zoe Ronnau Creates Monarch Butterfly Habitat at Lee School

Thanks to the hard work and leadership of Rossmoor’s Zoe Ronnau, Lee School now has a Monarch Butterfly Habitat!

A Los Al senior, Zoe completed her Monarch Butterfly Habitat and Garden as her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The project was funded through cookie sale proceeds, personal contributions, and generous donations from local nurseries.

After discovering that the Monarch Butterfly population has shrunk by 86% and is now on the endangered species list, Zoe got the idea of creating a butterfly garden habitat. She researched, planned and designed the Habitat and then received permission to construct it at Lee Elementary here in Rossmoor.

Then came the hard work of tilling the soil, and planting the milkweed, violet verbena along with other native plants along the pathway. There will be signage about the purpose of the garden habitat helping to educate students and visitors about the importance of the Monarch Butterfly, its lifecycle, and endangered status.

Zoe chose Lee for her project for a couple of reasons. First, because she attended Lee as a student. Second, she had helped her brother’s Boy Scout Troop build the community vegetable garden there. That garden, which is adjacent to Zoe’s Habitat, continues to be maintained by area Master Gardeners and is very productive.

This is such a great example of round-trip sustainable living. Planting attractors that help our birds, butterflies, and bees pollinate for better crop yields, and growing our own fruits and vegetables. There is no better way to learn and experience healthy food choices. #sustainrossmoor
