Why We Remember: The Story Behind Memorial Day

Each year at the end of May, American flags line sidewalks, families gather around barbecues, and towns across the country hold quiet ceremonies in parks or near war memorials. Memorial Day, often seen as the unofficial start of summer, is also one of the most solemn observances on the national calendar. But how often do we pause to consider its true origin?

Memorial Day traces its roots back to the aftermath of the Civil War—America’s deadliest conflict. In the spring of 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Union veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. It was originally known as Decoration Day, a time when people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. The date chosen, May 30, was believed to be one where flowers would be in bloom across the country.

As wars touched more generations—World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond—the observance evolved. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday, set for the last Monday in May to allow for a three-day weekend. While the long weekend is cherished, the core purpose of the day remains: to honor the men and women who died in military service to the United States.

Unlike Veterans Day, which celebrates all who have served, Memorial Day is reserved for remembrance. It asks something quieter and more reflective of us: not just to wave the flag, but to consider the weight of the sacrifice behind it.

In our community, whether you attend a ceremony, visit a local cemetery, or simply take a moment of silence, Memorial Day offers a chance to connect with the deeper threads of our shared history. It’s also a moment to recognize the cost of conflict—and the value of peace.

As we move through the holiday weekend, may we carry with us a sense of gratitude not only for those who served, but for the principles they stood to protect: freedom, responsibility, and the ties that bind us together as a nation.
