Our Rossmoor - A Great Place To Live Since 1957

Tree City USA – Rossmoor

Tree City Usa - Rossmoor

As you likely know, Rossmoor has been designated as a Tree City USA community for almost 14 years now.

Since April is Earth Month and there are a number of Arbor Day events scheduled throughout the community all month long, It’s time to review just how important this designation is to our community and western Orange County.
Here’s a little bit of info about what it means to be a Tree City. One of the primary functions of our Community Services District (CSD) is to maintain our parks and park services, funded by an allocation of our property tax revenues. This tax allocation is the primary funding source for CSD’s operations, and as such (of course) our trees occupy a large part of their responsibilities, as stewards of our parklands.
Started in 1976, Tree City USA is one of the Arbor Day Foundation’s oldest programs. Its founders had a vision for a greener, healthier America, and hoped this initiative would inspire change on a nationwide level.
The first Tree City USA cohort was comprised of 42 communities in 16 states. Today, the program includes more than 3,600 communities from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
This link is for a presentation by the Arbor Day Foundation for communities to use, in advocating to be a Tree City. While we already have this designation, it succinctly describes what it means, and how becoming one happens. Enjoy!

  1. “Help Save Our Trees” was the title of the notice that I placed in the Seal Beach Journal in 1979. I had recently moved to Rossmoor, partially because I loved the trees here. Yet many trees were being removed, effecting the beauty of our neighborhood. Six residents contacted me and we formed the Rossmoor Tree Committee. Eventually Shirley Kirkpatrick became our leader and our group initiated new policies for tree maintenance for all of unincorporated Orange County.

    1. Thanks so much for the back history Rhonda, and thank you for being part of the group that helped shape the tree policy here in Rossmoor.

Our wonderful trees have continue to be a high priority for our residents.
