Rossmoor Lights Celebration – It’s a Process

We’ve had some questions in social media and via email regarding the Lights Celebration, the nomination prizes and the Lights Bike Tour dates.

This celebration is an amazing thing that has evolved in  Rossmoor formally over the past 18 years, and likely a decade before, maybe more. We will save that rabbit trail for another time. For now, let’s look at what we have today.

There’s a progression here that the whole neighborhood to take part in. First, residents decorate their homes – without the joyful and creative decorations, there’s no celebration at all. Right?

2024 Rossmoor Lights Celebration Nomination Contest

Once the homes are decorated, we (mostly Chris Marshall and Kiran Nolan) need a list of the very best decorated Rossmoor homes. There are ~3500 homes here in Rossmoor on more than 30 miles of streets. There’s no way the judging team can know where all the best houses are without all of  us to share what we see on our streets or in our travels. (See something, say something…😊

So, we (the RHA, Chris, Kieran, and the entire community for that matter) need you to nominate the homes that speak the holiday spirit to you.

The RHA gives you a little incentive by giving away $50 gift cards to randomly selected nominators – each nomination is an entry. You can make those nominations here.

Then from the list of nominations, the judges select the top representations of the holidays. The award  “categories” vary and there’s no “ranking” just a celebration of the holiday spirit.

After the nominations are in and the awards are set, the famous HotSpot map is created (thanks Kieran) and shared with the neighborhood via Google Maps. We get tens of thousands of views on the HotSpot map each year. The map becomes available mid-December on the RHA website along with the Recognition Awards for the season.

Then the Lights Bike Tour gets planned around the locations included on the HotSpot map and happens a few days or a week before Christmas Day.

There are many people involved in pulling this series of  festive events off:

  1. The residents who decorate
  2. The residents who nominate
  3. Chris, Kieran and their Team of Judges
  4. The RHA Comms Team for the promotion and prizes
  5. Bike Rossmoor for planning and hosting the Lights Bike Tour

And of course all the people who enjoy the Spirit of the Holiday in Rossmoor, residents and visitors alike.

A huge thanks to all of you – this Rossmoor Spirit only happens when we all work together – unity in the community pays off in holiday joy and celebration!

Happy Holidays!
