Did you know that the Rossmoor Homeowners Association (RHA) oversees the Neighborhood Watch (NW) program in our community?
It’s true. Since 1981, the RHA has worked closely with residents and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (our local law enforcement agency) to build a safer, more connected Rossmoor.
Unlike in other areas where Neighborhood Watch may be run by different groups and in some areas police departments or city recreation departments, the RHA started our NW program shortly after the national Neighborhood Watch Program was launched. The RHA is dedicated to guiding and supporting these efforts right here at home to help keep Rossmoor the great place to live it has always been.
What is Neighborhood Watch?
Neighborhood Watch is a community-led program that empowers residents to take an active role in neighborhood safety. By encouraging neighbors to look out for one another, report suspicious activity, and foster open communication, the program helps reduce crime and build a stronger, safer, and more resilient community.
Â
How Does Neighborhood Watch Work in Rossmoor?
The RHA coordinates the program by working with volunteer points of contact or “block captains” to keep the neighborhood informed and connected. The RHA works with the OCSD to ensure our community has the tools, resources, and training needed to address neighborhood concerns.
This ongoing collaboration enhances our collective safety, creating a network of watchful eyes across Rossmoor and empowering us all to protect our homes and families.
Beyond “Watch”
Drawing on dozens of disasters over the past two decades, FEMA has found that the most resilient communities after a disaster like a wildfire, hurricane, tornado, or earthquake are those communities that had neighbors who were connected pre-disaster.
These pre-disaster connections allows these groups of neighbors recover more quickly primarily because they knew each other and were in a better position to share resources and skills than disconnected neighborhoods.Â
It’s A Community Effort
Rossmoor’s Neighborhood Watch is successful thanks to the involvement and vigilance of many residents. If you’re interested in joining or learning more, reach out to the RHA Neighborhood Watch Team to see how you can help keep Rossmoor safe.
Please note: For Rossmoor’s Neighborhood Watch, all program-related questions or concerns should be directed to the RHA or the Sheriff’s Department. Involving other agencies just slows down the process of getting you timely and accurate answer to your questions.
In Rossmoor, Neighborhood Watch is truly community-driven, with the RHA at the helm to keep the program effective, responsive, and dedicated to our unique needs with reliable communications.
