Fall Things to Do With The Family

Family Outing - Our Rossmoor Family Fun Project

We hear all the time how busy people are with work and family commitments. And still, there are times that it would be nice if there was something fun to do that either didn’t take a lot of time or was something that took very little planning. So we got to thinking, what if…

And here’s what we came up with:

    • Make a “Thankful Tree”
In preparation for Thanksgiving (yep, that’s next month), set out a bunch of leaves (cut shapes from paper), a pen, and tiny clips, with a small sign inviting people to record something they are thankful for. Clip the leaves to real branches in a vase for a meaningful centerpiece.
    • Visit a Vineyard During the Grape Harvest
If you are lucky enough to live within driving distance of a wine-growing region, autumn is an ideal time to visit. With the grape harvest coming in, the vineyards are bustling with activity, and many wineries host special events and festivals during this time. Temecula has some super nice wineries you can visit
    • Pack a Picnic Basket
For a quicker outing, pack a few edibles and a blanket, and head to the nearest park or lake for a picnic. If you love picnicking, try keeping a basket packed (except for the food, of course) by the front door, so you can grab it and go when inspiration strikes.

Go on an Autumn Hiking Trip
Summer hiking is great, but if you ask me, fall hiking is even better. Most of the bugs are gone, and the cooler weather makes hiking more pleasant. There are dozens of places you can go to take a hike in the eastern Orange County area or a little further away in the Santa Monica, San Gabriel, or San Bernardino Mountains.

    • Host a Harvest Party or Attend a Harvest Festival
Invite friends and family over for a potluck or visit one of the many harvest fairs and festivals happening at this time of year. From the biggest-pumpkin contests to live music, there’s something for everyone.
    • Take a Trip to a Pumpkin Patch
Pick up some pumpkins, gourds, and fall flowers to decorate with. The more, the merrier. An abundance of pumpkins and gourds in different shapes, sizes, and colors makes for a cheerful display that will last through the autumn months. If you have little ones, make it a tradition to take their picture sitting among the pumpkins — Rossmoor Farmers Marketover the years, you can see how they grow from pumpkin size to towering over the orange globes!  There are lots of pumpkin patches around, but Irvine Park Railroad’s Pumpkin Patch is a lot of fun for the entire family.

And of course, on Thursdays from 4 to 7 pm you can stop by the Rossmoor Farmers Market and see what fresh fruits and vegetables, yummy food, and other craft and hobby items are available. It’s a fun way to break up the afternoon or grab a bite to eat close to home.
